greener grass everywhere

No matter what, in this life you will always find something else you want... something you don't have, something you can't get. Doesn't matter who you are or where you're from, there's bound to be something you want but don't have!

Now, I have this ring you see. And I try to take pictures of it... but my lenses, not made for this kind of photography! I try and try, I make what I have work. But then you get the real deal in your hands and *POW* it works like butter. Just like you always thought it should work.

DSC_8477

I felt that way the first time I held my 5D. For months I struggled in photoshop working images for hours on end to get them to look just so...

the first images I looked through from the 5D I melted into a puddle realizing how beautiful they came SOOC {straight out of the camera}

DSC_8484

These two particular pictures were taken with a Nikon D700 {Andrea's D700 to be exact} with the Nikon 105mm f/2.8 macro. Butter I tell you. Snap snap is all it took and this girl was sold.

If grass weren't greener on the other side there would be no reason for change. No reason to get better at things. No reason to excel...

But there is, so I see this not as a classic case of envy but rather a learning experience. One which will help me to see what tools I need to do even better work ;)

redirect

This post is a shameless redirect to my photo blog. Most of you who read this probably already read the photo blog, but I have nothing to post today and feel the need to post. Although I am failing miserably at NaBloPoMo, I'm trying to be better at not giving up entirely when I can't do something perfect. There's something to be said for persistence!

Goodson-9

Anyways, these little footsies belong to brand new baby Haven Hope. I tagged along with Andrea the other day when she went to Seth and Tarah's to take these and am so happy I did. There are more on my photo blog from this shoot as well as on Andrea's flickr account :)

my career as an auctioneer

Ok, not entirely accurate, but for kicks and giggles, let's just go with it k?

The truth is that I was hired to take pictures at one of the biggest machinery auctions in NY state. They wanted pictures of the actual auctioneers doin their thing, plus shots that would show how much equipment was there, large crowds gathered around it etc. It was a looong, hot day. But we made it a lot of fun, so what I have to show you will look like all we did was goof off the whole time... but we actually did get some pretty awesome stuff.

noone told me this was a goofball pic

This is Nicole. AKA my lifesaver. Doing this project without her wouldn't have been nearly as fun.

65 feet up

We got to go up in the lift 3 times to get shots of different things that were going on. A couple people asked if I would be ok with heights, and I was all, of course, why wouldn't I be? But after being asked a few times, I started to wonder... Am I supposed to be afraid of this? heck no! It was totally fun!

farmland!

In the background you can see all the trailers lined up waiting to be auctioned off.

i had a nightmare about this the other night...

This reminded me of a crazy dream I had the other night. It was one of those dreams where you're not quite all the way asleep, but enough so that you can definitely be dreaming...

Well, in the dream, I was standing below one of these. And it was as if all of a sudden the scoop thing started dropping down right over me. I woke up so quickly that I jumped just as it was about to totally smash into me. So when I saw this, I couldn't help but get inside and show it who was boss.

random old guy

There weren't a whole lot of girls there, so it was no surprise the amount of (mostly old) men came up to us and asked for pictures... This guy being one of the more memorable ones... ha!

heeYAW!

I remember having huge tires like this at playgrounds when I was little. They were huge then, and they're still huge now!

old skool

What do you see in this picture? Well if you said a very hot, extremely attractive blonde, you would be wrong... well, there is that, but I'm looking for something more ;)

Take a look at my feet. Honestly, this picture does them no justice... but let me just tell you, I/we should not have been wearing flip flops! We shoulda been wearin cowboy or work boots! there was so much mud everywhere, it was totally unavoidable. I got stuck more than once and at times stepped through puddles almost up to my ankles.

MACK

This was a shot we had to go back to get. The first time we passed by this old MACK there were too many people to pose with it. But we came back after awhile and they had passed.

Anyways, as a whole, it was a great experience. It's crazy how I happen upon this stuff. But it's so great to have the flexibility to decide when and where I want to work, I love it!

Tomorrow is packing day. And then Sunday is NC baby! I don't know that I have formally talked about this on my blog, and I don't really feel the need to write a whole long drawn out thing about it... but I need to say something about it at least.

For the last couple months I've been seriously considering and even planning my move to NC. However, over the last 4ish weeks, I have done some serious reconsidering. Ultimately, I decided that this is not the right time for me to make a move like that. Unless you know me only through my blog, you probably already knew this, but I felt that I just needed to say that on here anyhow. There are a lot of factors that have gone into this decision, but I can say in all honesty that I couldn't be happier about it. Somehow, this whole process has given me new reason and a renewed purpose for being here.

We'll see how I feel once February hits... lol

small-town USA

I was asked to take pictures for the Lima Crossroads Festival this past Saturday. It was a lot of fun, but seriously, a looooongg day. I knew it would be. I was under no delusions. But I made the best of my downtime.

I was able to walk around connecting with most of the vendors that came and passed out a ton of literature. I have come to realize that since almost all of my business has been through word of mouth or referral that connecting with people is pretty much my most valuable tool. Fortunately, it happens to be something I love doing. So score for that one!

I also got to see a lot of people that I already knew but just haven't seen in awhile. I love small-towns for just that reason. There's such a sense of belonging that accompanies small-town life.

pup pup

Amidst shooting pictures of the bed-race, lima bean bake-off, people being dragged to jail to raise money and the battle of the bands, I got some pretty cool stuff. But as I sorted through everything this morning, this little guy stood alone as my favorite shot of the day :)

i <3 faces: hats

Every week when I <3 faces rolls around, I look at the requirements and try to figure out if I already have a picture that works. I would love to have the time to come up with something new each week... but alas, I do not!

But this week, the requirements are a face, and a hat. YES! Something I have!

This is Emily. She is a senior graduating this year. We've been planning her session pretty much aaall winter... and finally, the nice weather came.

In other news, I am making plans to go to maryland in June! I'll write another post about that because I need to get some interest in the DC area before I can make my plans official ;) So, be watching for that post!

who am i? my life story, up to this point

A few days ago, I was reading MckMama's blog and she had written a post that outlined the highlights in the history of her life. I really liked the idea, so i have decided to follow suit and am going to replicate my own version of the same thing. sooooo, here goes... who is Amanda?

In the beginning of October 1984, i am born. I was the third child born into our small family and the first girl. My dad had prayed for a little girl, and has never let me forget that I was the answer to that prayer. My family was in the process of growing again after the 13 years that separated me from my older brother, the second born, and not long after my birth, my little brother Dan made his arrival known.

Just before Dan was born in the spring of 1986 I fell on the road and landed on my chin while running with my hands in my pockets at 18 months old. We didn't know it at the time, but that fall left me with a whiplash that later on had some serious repercussions.

Dan was born in July 1986 and i was 21 months old. This is my second earliest memory, as falling on my chin was the first. I remember them both clear as day. And I remember that my dad didn't want my to hold little danny... wonder why... haha

December 1986, i got my first baby doll and named her Katie.

The first rememberance I have of inviting Jesus to live in my heart was at this time as well. Some may think that's too young, or that i cannot possibly remember well enough, or have comprehended what i was doing, but i disagree. I was well aware of what I did, and was very intentional about it :)

June 1987, my oldest brother Rob, graduated from high-school and joined the Navy. He boarded a bus to Florida for nuclear training and I remember being sad for the first time in my life. He was my best bud up to that point.

January 1989, the first Bush became president and my older brother Jay was a senior in high-school. I convinced my mom to let me cut my hair short and began kindergarten that fall... successfully starting a brand new generation of gradeshoolers just as my mom was finished with the first!

October of both '89 and '90 I refused to smile for school and/or family pictures, claiming i was "sad that Robbie was gone" or "i could hear baby Katie crying."

The next fall, 1991, my mom convinced me that it would "make Robbie happy" if i smiled for my school picture... and so I did.

My grandpa died in 1991 when i was in first grade... i'm sure i was sad at times between this moment and when rob left for the navy, but those are the two times in my young life I recall being changed by that feeling.

1989-1992 I attended public school and upon finding out that I didn't know how to add, my mom decided to homeschool me for awhile so that I would catch up.

As with many homeschool families, I went back and forth between skipping grades and then not. My younger brother did in fact skip a grade, but as time went by my parents let him stay back where he belonged as it was just too much pressure for such a youngster :)

I stayed right on track with my schooling for the 6 years we homeschooled.

Summer of 1992 Barney and friends came out on pbs and i was almost in 3rd grade. Completely unacceptable for someone of my age to enjoy such a juvenile show. I loved it.

Late 1992 my brother Jay met Kathleen. They were engaged early 1993 and married that June. I was a junior bridesmaid.

Later that year, I began having some serious health problems. I would black out on a regular basis, many days up to 30 times. I had appointments and neuro scans and ekg's and eeg's and everything else you could imagine. They could NOT figure out what was wrong with me.

When my first niece was born shortly after my 10th birthday in 1994, I was not even allowed to hold her standing up, because everyone was afraid i would black out and fall over. I began taking iron, and for a time, that seemed to help. But it was only a band-aid.

Summer 1995 rolled around and I made my first plane ride. To SanDiego, California for my brother Rob's wedding to Dyan. We found out after the wedding in July, that they had previously eloped April 13th in Hawaii (as that was where they both lived at the time) and were consequently 8 weeks pregnant at the time of the wedding in July... with TWINS!

The doctor visits continued until finally I saw an allergist and everything fell into place. It turned out I had many environmental allergies which were causing my equilibrium to be completely off balance, and as a result of the whiplash i sustained at 18 months, my body could not adjust to the changes.

I started seeing a chiropractor regularly at age 10. After just a couple months of treatment and beginning allergy shots, I was completely normal!

*please, no snide comments regarding that last statement*

This is kinda where things start getting blurry, I don't remember much from age 10-14, but I'm going to highlight what I do.

In 1996, my family decided to make a move to a new house that would allow my grandma and grandpa to come live with us. As we made this transition, it was very hard for me... in almost every way.

I lacked friends because we moved, and because I was homeschooled, making new friends was near impossible. I did however, manage to make a few, and survived the next couple years. By the time i entered 8th grade in 1997, my mom had taken a position as a part time secretary at a local church and my studies became more than either of us were able to keep up with. Nothing being wrong with any of it, or homeschooling in general, it just became clear that I needed to enter into a school where I would have more available for my education.

Beginning of 1998, my younger brother and I entered a small private Christian school not far from where we lived. Most of that year i spent friendless, as I felt very insecure about myself and the idea that others would like me or want to be friends with me was foreign. Where in the world did this thinking come from? I still haven't figured it out, except that maybe i was a normal typical teenager? Ha!

Yearbooks came out a month before school let out for the summer and I made an effort to both pass mine around as much as I dared as well as sign others. One girl, named Beka, signed my yearbook and stated that we should "get together over the summer." the highlight of my year.

We did hang out that hot 1999 summer and we quickly became good friends. All while eating bologna and potato chips on the beach and getting sun burnt...

Fall 2000 came, and i entered 10th grade more confident than ever because, now, I had someone who wanted to be MY friend. We spent the year coming up with inside jokes and watching eachother move through the growing pains of teenhood.

2001, she had a boyfriend, and in my desperate attempt to keep up, I befriended a certain boy. Although we never dated, the thought had crossed my mind, but always in the back of it there was a nagging voice telling me to stay away. I unfortunately pushed it aside far too many times and ended up hurting myself a lot.

In march 2001, I got my driver's license. woohoo! Freedom! well, not so much, but in my 16 year old mind it was.

Later on that year, my dad received his third diagnosis of cancer. This one being far worse than the previous times. In 1998, he had one of his kidneys removed due to kidney cancer and he also had a small surgery on a patch of skin cancer. This time though, it was lymphoma. Virtually a death sentence.

My parents sat down with me just before my senior year of school began in September 2001 and told me the news. I have tried very hard to speculate and come to conclusions about what happened that year, trying not to blame my lack of emotion on anything... but the only thing I can come to is that I completely blocked out that there was anything wrong at all. I really don't remember anything about his cancer...

It was the worst year (as a whole) of my life to date. I have since had hard times, but that was all in all the worst year I remember.

I began dating a guy in the beginning of 2002. One that I thought i would marry. In fact, when summer rolled around, I was graduated and he had a year on me, he bought a ring. However, as I began to weigh in all the facts, realizing that a proposal was imminent, I freaked out. I realized that I was 17 years old, in a first-time relationship and was allowing myself to leave nothing hanging in the balance. My future was set if i stayed with him. I would be married by 19 and surely have a child shortly thereafter... factoring in many other things, I felt highly unprepared to take all that on. I broke up with him just 8 months after we started dating.

Thanksgiving 2002, I flew to Hawaii to visit my brother Rob and his family. Dyan and their 3 kids. Up to that point, I had never been anywhere tropical, and now, having travelled quite a bit, have still never gone to a more beautiful place.

Upon arriving back home, I had a mess to deal with. The friends that I had built my life around before, during, and after my breakup, were proving to be less than a good influence. A few well-remembered mishaps sent the entire lot of them out of my life. I chose to lose them all... and I chose to be alone. I had noone for that time.

It forced me to a place with the Lord that I had not known. I began hearing his voice and understanding who he was in my life. I felt called to attend a Bible school for a year.

In the meantime that year, 2002-2003 I worked at a more high end photography studio initially as just a type of assistant for any and all jobs, which turned into a position that I loved more than any job i've had since (save my own photography business) I worked on all the production work, so basically everything that happened with the pictures after they were taken. I loved that job and would have loved to stay on, but it just wasn't the right thing for me at the time. There were also a lot of things going on that I didn't catch onto because of my age... all in all, I am glad to have had the experience, but would not want to go back and revisit.

In August 2003, I moved into the dorms of this Bible school, and my life changed forever. I made a few good friends there and my life with God changed. Looking back, I regret having allowed myself to participate in all the surrounding drama, but realize that God was truly there... and I wouldn't trade that.

Christmas 2003 marked our second trip to Hawaii as my brother was still stationed there. What an awesome break to go somewhere that beautiful and tropical in the mid winter. As it stood, I still wore a sweatshirt the entire time I was there... people think i'm nuts, but what can I say, once I get cold, it's hard to get warm again!

January 2004, we arrived back to snow and ice, my core temperature was barely back to normal. Within days of returning I received a phone call one saturday morning that resulted in my heroic fall off the top bunk whereupon i broke my right foot. I swear, I never thought it would ever get back to normal. I quickly forgot what it was like to walk without pain, that thought that i would never be able to walk fast or run again. And just in case you didn't put two and two together, ice and crutches and living on the 3rd floor with no elevator... not a good combination.

I had planned to attend the Bible school for 3 years, but when we let out for the summer months in April 2004, I realized that I was either going to a) start making a ton more money than I was or b) live at home instead of on campus. When my request to live off campus was denied, I decided that I couldn't go back and started thinking about my next move.

I heard about a job at the local ADT office and decided to apply if only just to make some money while I figured out what to do. I was hired in June 2004 with the understanding that I would not start until mid-august as I had taken a 6 week position at the summer camp I went to as a kid. I spent the better part of that summer with girls of all ages and making new friendships and learning lessons (some harder than others)

August 2004... ADT began, and my life consequently came to a halt. I am not one to complain all that often, but I hated that job. I liked it at times but all in all, it was just awful. I finished up there just 8 months in and continued working at a photography studio much like Sears or JCPenney. I worked 3 Christmases there and have vowed to never work in the mall during Christmas again.

During this time, I began taking classes at the local community college... I spent 3 consecutive semesters there studying graphic design and taking a couple photography classes as well.

2005 I worked another summer as a camp counselor, this time shifting camps in between. I was burnt out by the end of the summer and in September I began my first nanny job for a little tiny 3 month old baby. He's not so little anymore :) His name is Samuel and both him and his family became a very precious part of my life. I look back on those days (although scattered with sleep hell and meltdowns from ahem both michelle and i :) with fondness and am so glad to have those memories.

When summer 2006 rolled around, I began to feel as though I couldn't do the same thing for more than one year at a time... it seemed to be becoming a pattern... and i didn't like it! Yet, I changed things again... I started by taking the entire summer off. it was GREAT!

September 2006, I began working part-time as a teacher's assistant at a local pre-school. I was also selling jewelry for a time and had a lot of fun doing the parties and other such things that go along with that kind of business. I learned an awful lot about running a business, and while I'm no longer doing that particular venue, I am so glad to have had the experience. it's helped me a lot as I've started my photography business.

In Feburary 2007, my life took a turn and changed for what would turn out to be (in my opinion) the most changing experience of my life. I met Maureen, who is the mom of the kids I now take care of full-time. Within the first night of meeting, she had already asked me to come work for her, and I felt from the very beginning that it would be an amazing experience.

I began working for them in June 2007 and although it took me a few months, I soon bonded with their family and now feel as though they are a part of my own.

In July 2007 I travelled outside to country (to somewhere besides Canada) for the first time in my life. I ended up having my passport stamped in both Dubai and India that summer! If Dubai had just been a layover, I would not have considered myself to have actually been there, but seeing as how I was there for over 48 hours and in a hotel most of that time... I was there. Due to unforseen circumstances that trip was the most stressful time of my life and I ended up having some serious physical repercussions as a result of that stress... my hair began falling out in large quantities.

Soo, in September 2007 I chopped it off. Looking back on the pictures, I can see why noone else really noticed... but man, did I. It was awful. It finally, a year and a half later has gotten back to pretty much normal and I'm tempted to try growing it out once again. Note to self for future - don't get stressed out!

As fall began to set in, I realized I needed an outlet for my creativity. I took a drawing class (and two others that I can't remember haha!) and also started this blog. I remember sitting down to try and start it and having no idea what to write... that didn't last long!

The year moved on, and soon, 2008 rolled around. I was so inspired by all the beautiful pictures I saw on other people's blogs who didn't seem to be a whole lot different than me and decided to pick up my digital rebel again. Would you believe that still at this time, I was sort of embarassed to carry it around. And in all honesty, that's the real reason I bought a Canon digital elph just a year after purchasing my rebel.

I had that rebel for over 3 years before I started putting it to use. I wanted originally because I have always loved photography... but it seemed the more i learned about photography the more I realized i didn't know. Normally, I would tell anyone else who said that to me that they were crazy and to go for it. I mean, how in the world will you ever learn if you don't pursue it!

January, February, March 2008. I baked, and began the lovely art of capturing my confections. Then, mid March, Michelle came to me again and insisted that I take some pictures of her while she was still pregnant with the Queen Bee. I honestly did not want to do it... but she talked me into it. And knowing how artistic and creative she is herself, I went along with it. And this was the result.

I couldn't have been happier... it didn't take me long to start thinking that I wanted to get better at this. I knew i still had a lot to learn... so why not just learn it. Then, long about May, I bought my first real lens.

Lest this become the story of the last year and how I became a photographer, I am going to wrap up the rest of last year and save the future for, well, the future. Who knows what it will hold.

My best friend from high-school got married in May 2008 and I travelled once again out of the country, but this time to Mexico.

January 2009, I am learning more and more every day about the things I love most. I am growing into a more understanding and (hopefully) patient girl. I am learning that loving people is not always easy... sometimes it's just what you do. I am becoming more confident in the talent that God has given me. I am hopeful that my future is sustained only by my reliance upon the Lord. And I am hoping that I will never think that i've figured it all out...

That's me :)

mini-shoot madness

It all started with Melissa wanting me to take her picture sitting on the plate. With the Christmas balls.

How cute.

Oh melissa look how cute you are! Cutsie tootsie wootsie!

I'm fairly certain baby noises were being made here...

So... SHH! Don't tell anyone she is really twenty something and could possibly have a baby of her own quite soon... I won't tell ;)

But it was hard to regain control after that happened... It started going down hill quickly

And soon Jim and I were practically having a second dinner...
.
Scarves are nutritious... don't know if you knew that. But now you do.

Anyways, these are all pictures from the other day when Melissa and I did our 5 mini-sessions in one day. It was soooo great, but soooo much WORK! I often think of this song when I think back on that day... LOL!

Anyways, we had fun, and I'm still posting sessions from that day over on my photo blog. Go check it out!

handle with care

after checking the status of my package and realizing that it was indeed AT MY HOUSE, and I WAS NOT, I quickly devised a strategy to book it home and retrieve it.

that strategy included waking up andy.

he got to sleep for 45 minutes... plenty right?

well, here it is. Fragile: handle with care. like the 3 tears in the box there? That's nice I think.

There are about 25 or so pictures of me actually opening the box, and what i did with the camera in those precious first few moments... but they're so intimate i feel uncomfortable sharing them on here.

Good lord people! It's a camera for crying out loud! Not a stinking CHILD!!!

But my goodness, it was very, very exciting to open this thing up.

Nothing could have prepared me for the extreme happiness I feel holding this camera.

Just tonight I set up the lights in the dining room and hung up a sheet to do some test shots... there's no way i could ever go back now...

from the moment I decided to get this camera I had this feeling that I should never use the camera before actually owning it. Because once I did, it would be over. I would never be able to use my camera without feeling annoyed that i couldn't do "this" or "that." I couldn't know what I was missing out on... but now I know... and it is soooo good :)

I'll spare you all the crazy photographer mumbo jumbo, just trust me when I say it's good

So here is my fave from the night.

This particular shot is completely unedited. i am simply LOVING the fact that I can shoot in b&w. I never thought I would want to... that i would want the option always of having color... but now... I don't know... I liked the bw shots tonight so much more than the color.

We shot just under a hundred and what's so cool about using the lights is that once they are set, you just shoot. You don't have to worry about exposure at all... you already did that. So I sat down and had my mom shoot me too, and that's where the pic at the top of this post came from. It's also for the benefit of those who wanted to see my face when I wouldn't show it the other night.

That's it for now... I must force myself to go to bed, because as I explained yesterday I have been getting up at unearthly times... and will continue to do so...

twitter me softly...

Well, I decided to give it a shot. I've resisted for a long time, but we'll see if this is something I actually like.

I automatically had 10 people that I'm following, but I only have 1 person following me. So if you'd like to follow me here is my url http://twitter.com/aboynamedbarry.

I guess I should add it to my blog somewhere, but I don't know how to do that. I guess I can figure it out.

--------------------------------------------------

In other news, I got home last night at about 4:30 whereupon i promptly opened my laptop to see if it would connect... and guess what

IT DID!

Wanna take a stab at what I did the REST OF THE NIGHT! All the things and more I've been dying to do for the last 2 years!

I watched TV the entire time and sat in the chair with my feet up editing pictures and staying ONTOPOF my email like nobody's business.

In fact, I got an email from a friend telling me what time to come over tonight to babysit... and I had not written it down and consequently made other plans. So i called him up and he was like "whoa, how in the world did you resond so fast?! do you get email updates on your phone?" no, no i do not. I simply have wireless internet that works!

My conclusion about Best Buy. While I had a heckofatime trying to get what I wanted... I got it eventually. But really, it shouldn't be this much work.

I shouldn't have to call up more than once and get to the verge of an all out yell-fest to get what I want from my warranty. I'm going with newegg.com when I get my 5D. Of that I am sure (and the fact that Best Buy doesn't sell those anyway!)

--------------------------------------------------

I have three photo sessions coming up this month. Hopefully a 4th, but I really don't have the time. I had hoped that I would be able to continue booking sessions through the fall and into the winter, but I never really thought it would happen as well as it has!

Thank God for yearbook deadlines and procrastinating parents!

I met a lady the other day at a super huge consignment sale and struck up a conversation with her about photography. She was so excited to have met me and I am going to call her today to try and schedule something for November.

I decided that when the website goes live, and I have something official to send people to... I am going to go out and literally and personally solicit myself. What I want to do more than anything is newborn photography... like under 10 days kinda newborn.

So this is my idea... and you can tell me if you would be totally weirded out by this or if you would have welcomed this opportunity.

I'd like to go to the mall or target or heck, even babies R us and find pregnant women, approach them and engage in conversation and let them know I'm doing a promotional to get my business started. Give them my rates and then offer to take their newborns pictures (within 10 days of the birth) for FREE and if they like them, they can purchase prints from me...

Personally, I would probably freak out at an opportunity like that... but I'm looking for some opinions here. Would you be weirded out? Excited? Wondering why in the world this crazy girl thought it would be ok to come talk to you in the first place...?

Heh, it will be interesting. So let me know what you think you would do, or how you would react.

amandslakesphotography.com

This is something I've been wanting to say for such a long time on here.

It's finally happening! I've done the research and I am currently/actively working on the website for my photography business!

Most likely, when I actually launch the site I will create another blog that will be more photography related, but for now, I'm just going to be using this one... you don't mind do you? ;)

From time to time I may ask for input also... I'm trying to come up with a good design for my logo and I think that sometimes looking at it for too long skews my opinion.

- So for right now, what do you think of the header I have on right now for the announcement?
- Do you like the font, the way it flows?
- for the business name, should it be Amanda Slakes Photography OR amandaslakesphotography.com?

Thanks guys! <3 you all!

omg i never blog

I've always been of the mind that I would NOT write blogs like this. But i am feeling the need to express myself in this way, at this moment. So I would like to say it now.

Oh my goodness, I never blog.

On that note, I have something to share.

My latest shoot and one of the most beautiful girls I know.

I also thought I would share something else with you while I'm at it.

You might think that as a photographer, I am all charismatic and whatnot. And when I go out with people to take their pictures I'm super smooth and polished etc.

Let me assure you...

I am a completely the opposite!

This may sound weird, but it's true!

I get into this mindset where I'm trying to figure out what's going to look cool and tell my people to do crazy things sometimes... then when it's not working I just say forget it.

I often wonder to myself if I totally drive people nuts while doing this... but honestly, the bottom line is that I end up with good pictures for them.

And that's how I do it!

I dislike doing the same things over and over. And while I may repeat some things that I know look good, I always try to mix it up and fit into the person's individual style.

Anyways, I don't know that anyone needed to know that. But since I find it weird/interesting that I do this, I thought you might like to know too!

So this is Leah... this gorgeous girl you all saw. I love her so much. She is a total sweetheart as I'm sure you can see in her eyes.

She has a beautiful smile! and what was so funny about doing pictures with her is that I thought she would be totally posing it up for me because that's her personality, but she totally wasn't! In fact, whenever I would turn to her with my camera she would more or less shy away!

But when I would turn around to grab something from my bag, I would see her strike a pose or do something goofy, and I would whip around to try and catch her... but alas, she was faster. I managed to draw her out though, and I'm very pleased with the results.

I am currently/actively working on a website that I hope to be up within about a month. I am also going to be doing a promotional for my business, which if you haven't gathered (due to my lack of blogging!!!) I am currently in the process of starting.

So stay tuned for updates on that! And hopefully more (consistent) blogging will be in my future...

my life with photography - part 2

Alright! we're on to part 2! I wasn't sure exactly when and how I was going to have time to finish this post... and that's why i deferred to tuesday... but it turns out i have some time i wasn't expecting! it is currently 8:49am and ALL 3 kids are still in bed! It must have been a late night *ha!*

Anyways, enough with the intro. Here are the questions I made up and two that i didn't... and I saved the best one for last *wink*

Q: What kind of camera do I use?

I bought my first DSLR (digital single lens reflex) 4 years ago. It's a Canon Rebel (probably the first edition) and I knew practically nothing about it when I got it. Except that I could take cooleo pictures with blurry backgrounds (which is called Bokeh btw and SOO cool... I am still not sick of it, and probably never will be)

I didn't use the camera very much when I first got it, and in fact probably a year or so later decided to buy a very small Canon digital Elph to take with me everywhere. Now it's surprising if I even know where the Elph is as the Rebel travels with me almost everywhere.

My trusty rusty Rebel had some pretty major meltdowns in Mexico and I discovered that I am definitely using that thing to its maximum potential and it will soon need a replacement as I explained more in the previous post.

Q: How do I make ordinary pictures extraordinary?

(ahem *clears throat* I made this question up myself since noone actually asked. I know, you were probably intimidated by just HOW extraordinary they can be... it's ok to gawk, and I will answer the question you've been dying to ask, but just couldn't bring yourself to... ;)

I am in love with Photoshop.

It's very simple. Photoshop and I have a history together and we began as friends back in 2002... our relationship has evolved into a very close and personal love affair. I am always learning new things about Photoshop, and I don't think i will ever learn it all. One of the photography schools that I once looked into had a different PS class for each semester for 4 years... and that wouldn't cover everything.

It's a very in depth program, however, like with anything becomes easier and easier to use as you practice. I stumble upon new things by accident all the time. I had a book a few years ago that would help me figure things out, and I would suggest that... there are a lot of books, so maybe one that's like a photoshop "dictionary" of sorts.

Anyways, with all that said, there are actually a few things in PS that I do to almost every one of my pictures. I've used actions that you can download various places, but have yet to find any that i can't live without. I use the gaussian blur (which is found under >filter>blur>gaussian blur) often... and when I say often i mean like on 40% of my pictures. The other thing that I use on probably 90% is the contrast. I am a HUGE fan of contrast... i love the way it pulls out the darks and lights in your photos and makes them go from meh to BAM!

There are a few others, but i am thinking that I might break down more specific photoshop tips into different, shorter posts.

Q: What is an "aperature", and what does it do?

I love this question. Aperature is my favorite! The aperature works hand-in-hand with the shutter, and on an SLR camera these are the two main components that make it SLR.

The shutter speed determines how quickly the lens will open and shut to take the picture. The speeds are broken down into numbers which read (30, 60, 120 etc) but are actually fractions. So instead of 30, it's actually 1/30 of a second... make sense?

The next component is the aperature, which determines how WIDE the shutter will OPEN. Aperature is also measured in fractions even though it too is read like this (2.8, 3.5, 8.0 etc) It's actually 1/2.8 and 1/8.0. Ok this is the confusing part. The smaller the number, the bigger the aperature. If you look at the fractions it makes more sense in that 1/2 is bigger than 1/4 right?

So the number for aperature gets smaller, and the ap gets bigger... and when you get up to an ap that's say 16, you're talking about a really small one. Because it's really 1/16...

Now, the actual significance of this is where it gets interesting. If you can get past the numbers and grab hold of the concept, then you're doing yourself a favor :) The aperature adjusts the "field of focus" when you're taking a picture. This is how you get the blurry background or a picture that is crystal clear from front to back.

To get a blurry background, you want to use a LARGE aperature, such as a 1.4-3.5. My best lens only goes to 2.8 and it serves me well... however I'd like to down into the 1.4 world... then the blur would rock my socks!

If you want the picture to be focused completely, then you use a SMALL aperature, such as 11.0-16.0.

So here's what to remember... i'm trying to make this as simple as possible, but it's HARD!
- smaller number means bigger aperature (and vice versa)
- small ap means clear background
- large ap means blurry background

Q: *cough cough* i have kind of an embarrassing question for your photo tips.... how can you minimize the appearance of neck fat and other excess jiggle in a photo? (this question was posted for real and has not been altered in any way ;)

HAHAHA! I've tried this so many times... and have failed miserably. However, there IS actually a way to do it. It's called the liquify tool in photoshop. It's a very precise tool, but you can push and pull with it and move things around. Sooo... (alicia) if you're looking for a modelesque chin/neck, I would suggest that you consult a real professional... I'm still working on it :)

That's all I have for now... if you would like to learn more about photography, Rachel is doing a great series on photography for beginners, by beginners! You should check it out, and if you come up with any questions along the way, feel free to ask!

my life with photography - part 1

A couple months ago I mentioned that I would like to start doing posts with photoshop tips in them. I only had one person respond that they would like that, but since then I have had a couple more people express interest. So at the risk of feeling like a copy-cat, since Rachel just posted on this very topic, I am writing this post about my photo experiences sort of as a (hopeful) intro to many more photo-taking and photoshop tips.

This is going to be a two-part post. This post is just going to be some background to my life with photography... i didn't want to write too much all at once and bore you to tears. Although, if you're bored, then I guess you shouldn't be reading this? just a thought, HA!

So without further adu, let's go!

Q: How and when did you get interested in photography?

I have had a serious love for photography since I was about 15. My dad had an old Minolta SLR that I messed around with. I did a few art projects with it, and for my senior art show most of my pieces were photos that I had taken. *I won first place in that art show* :) seriously one of my proudest moments in life... so far

When I was 17, I decided that I wanted to get more serious about photography and possibly make it into a career. Since I was a senior I was looking at different options. A really great opportunity to work for a professional photographer opened up and I was able to work under this guy for a year and a half. I attribute much of my learning how to compose and my technical knowledge to him and his guidance.

My life with photoshop also began that year. He switched from film to digital my second summer... and I was in charge of the output and production. The learning curve was ridiculous, but I seriously loved it and had SO MUCH fun learning and doing everything.

After my time there ended I moved along and decided that I didn't necessarily want to take photography on as a profession at that point and started school. I bought my camera shortly before I began community college and used it all throughout to do my design and photography classes.

Somehow, my photography has continuously taken a backburner in my life... up until I started this blog.

I didn't intend for this to be a place to show off my work or anything like that. But it turned into a place where I knew I could share what I did and other people could appreciate it. Plus seeing other blogs like Andrea, Rachel, Kim and Britney i was totally inspired to keep taking pictures, and trying to make them better!

While I was in Mexico, I had numerous problems with my camera. It actually stopped taking pictures at two different points and would turn on and off randomly (on a full charge). It will take anywhere from 5-15 seconds to process one shot... I've discovered that I'm definitely at the point where I am using my camera to its maximum potential and it's TIME FOR AN UPGRADE!

I decided about 2 years ago that I wouldn't even allow myself to think about new camera equipment until I knew EXACTLY what i wanted and needed AND I was using what I had to the point where it was no longer giving me what I wanted. My goal in taking pictures has been to get so good at using the camera that it feels like an extension of my arm. I didn't think that would ever happen... but it has.

So in doing some research, I have decided that my next conquest (in the camera dept :) is going to probably be the Canon 5D. I may change my mind between now and the time I actually get it, but so far, this is what I want.

Come back Tuesday for my actual photo advice. I only had one specific question on my last post aobut this, so I'm making up questions to answer. But if you have any, leave them here now and I will include them.
